Intro to Burlesque
In this course, students will be given a friendly introduction to what burlesque is all about. You will be introduced to the compelling history of the art of the tease, discuss some of the most influential performers, and gain a basic understanding of tease terminology. In part two of the course you will engage in confidence building and self-empowerment exercises to ignite your inner striptease superstar. This course is the pre-requisite for the entire burlesque program and must be completed before continuing on to the other courses. Wear comfortable clothing you can move in and bring a pen, notepad and water. Bare feet, jazz shoes, ballet slippers, or heels all work well.
In Burlesque 101, you will choose a stage name and start creating your burlesque persona! Students will learn all the essential burlesque dance moves, as well as an introduction to costume removal using evening gloves. The studio will have plenty of gloves for you to use, but feel free to bring your own. Wear comfortable clothing you can move in and bring a pen, notepad and water. Bare feet, jazz shoes, ballet slippers, or heels all work well.
In Burlesque 102, students will elevate their striptease technique by adding more to their costume AND focusing on eye contact and facial expression. The choreography will build off of the glove peel learned in burlesque 101, and you will add a zipper front garment removal and bra removal. The choreography will involve not just dance movement, but also where to cleverly place eye contact and a smirk to build anticipation and excitement in your reveals! Bring evening gloves if you have your own, the studio has plenty to share as well. Bring a garment with a zipper in the front and a bra the has a back closure. Feel free to wear pasties or a sports bra/tank top underneath your bra. Bare feet, jazz shoes, ballet slippers, or heels all work well.
in Burlesque 103, students will explore props such as a chair and feather boa. Students will also be given tips, tools, and exercises for creating their own choreography and movement. We will continuing building our performances skills including eye contact and facial expression.
Time to hit the stage! You will learn a complete, choreographed group routine!
Six classes of learning burlesque group choreography and rehearsal. Students will have access to video recording to rehearse at home as well. Important note: Students are not allowed to miss any classes in the six weeks. If a class is missed you will be unable to perform in the showcase. Students will spend approximately $30-$50 on costume pieces for the performance.
Creating a Solo Act
In Creating A Solo Act, students will work on creating their very own solo routine or duet! We will begin by discussing the essentials for building an entertaining burlesque number; concept, music, costume, and choreography. Students will also get tips and tutorials on creating their own costumes. Throughout the process, you will workshop the act you’re creating with fellow students and get feedback from Scarlette. Students will present their full routine in its rough draft stages to the group for review. Wear comfortable clothing you can move in and bring a pen, notepad and water. CLASS SIZE LIMITED TO 14.
